Mary Connolly || Senior Consultant

Mary Connolly is an innovative, forward-thinking human resources leader with significant experience in multiple specialty areas. During her career, she adeptly transferred her HR services skills across roles in compensation, benefits, employee relations, and consistently championed and leveraged data and analytics to establish more cost-effective, progressive systems and organizations. A resilient leader and strategic thinker, she is a valuable business advisor and board member who broadens the aperture of those around her to creatively think outside the box. She is sought after for her best practices and mentorship, leading teams by example and inspiring them to achieve and exceed their potential.

Over the course of her career at Liberty Mutual, Mary rose to become Vice President and Manager of Employee Relations and HR Services, where she modernized and globalized systems to create an employee-centric digital experience for over 50,000 professionals worldwide. In this role, she transformed the Company’s HR services model. She implemented a data-driven global case management system that identified trends and more efficiently serviced HR issues while driving self-service using AI and RPA tools. She automated the company’s multi-company $3B payroll system, moving to a co-sourced model that reduced service cost and cycle time. Mary shared her expertise on these topics as a member of multiple leadership teams, including the Corporate Emergency Response Team, Global Data Governance, and Diversity and Inclusion committees.

Modernization is a strong theme throughout Mary’s career, enabling many strategic business decisions that enhanced competitiveness and reduced costs while improving the employee experience. In her senior Benefits roles, she transformed strategies and policies, transitioned the company’s pension plan to a cash balance formula, and optimized 401K plan offerings. She implemented a global system to better manage country health and pension plans while consolidating pension schemes in common markets. In the US, she streamlined the company’s health plan from a fragmented state approach to a self-insured national plan. She then implemented a health care analytics practice to identify spend drivers and reduce costs with plan design changes and wellness strategies. She additionally managed the internal Liberty Retirement Board, gaining strong boardroom insight during the leadership of two Chairman and CEOs.

As the Human Resources Manager for Liberty Mutual’s $2B commercial markets operations, Mary implemented assessments tools to reduce turnover, consolidated division operations, and moved a direct sales model to a broker distribution model. In her earlier roles, she managed both Executive Compensation and Compensation Operations. She has experience in all aspects of compensation strategy and design for employees, management, and board members.

Mary has served on the Advisory Board for the HR Policy Association, working with other large global employers on employment policy and practice. She was a board member for the Business Group on Health, where she collaborated with peers to improve population health around the world, and served on customer advisory boards for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Medco/Express Scripts. She has been a frequent public speaker as a subject matter expert on employee relations, employment policies, pay equity, health care, and wellness strategies.

Mary earned an MBA in Finance from University of Massachusetts and a BS in Business Administration from Suffolk University. She and her family live in Massachusetts.
