Looking in Your Own Back Yard

Many job seekers, especially those in smaller markets, think they have to leave home in order to land a great new position. Job searches are often intense and time consuming. Adding a relocation into the mix can be completely overwhelming! Before you pack up the moving van, we encourage you to take some time and explore local options. If you’re stuck or not sure where to begin, here are some ideas to jumpstart your local search.

Connect with your local Chamber of Commerce or Business Associations

Each region and some cities and towns have their own chambers of commerce and business associations. These groups work to connect their members (local businesses) with the community. Many of these groups have online membership directories and news updates. Searching their business directories is an effective way to find local companies and do follow-up research. From large corporations to smaller start-ups, connecting with these associations can be a great way to source potential leads. Some examples of regional groups include CenterState CEO, Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

Read up on companies and projects

Local organizations are doing amazing things and contributing to the region’s economy. To learn about these happenings and to stay current in the regional job market, check out articles and announcements on local media outlets and new sites. Central NY outlets with active business sections include the Utica Observer-Dispatch and Syracuse Post Standard

Network!

Talk to your friends and family to find out what is going on at their company.  Current employees are in the know about hiring leads and new projects. Often times, companies have an employee referral program where they encourage current employees to refer qualified candidates for jobs in their organizations. These are usually incentive programs so you and your friend will win. They get a bonus and you get a job!

Try connecting with fellow alumni for networking opportunities. You can reach out to your college or university career services or alumni relations offices. Many offer networking events based on region or career industry.

Don’t forget to connect with a reputable local search firm like M3 Placement & Partnership  who knows the region and the top employers! Many of M3’s most successful placements started from quiet and confidential searches with candidates who were already employed but seeking more in their careers. In fact, M3 is busy searching for great local talent to refer to some amazing employer partners.
